Mugwort: Mugwort(Artemisia vulgaris) is a powerful and complex herb used in traditional medicine across many cultures. It is most commonly associated with European, Chinese, and Indigenous American medicine and has deep connections to dream work, menstruation, digestion, and energetics of protection and boundary-setting.
Historically Mugwort has been considered for calming the nervous system, relieving tension, and promoting relaxation. It is used for stress-induced headaches, anxiety, and insomnia, and has an ancient reputation as a dream herb, often used as a tea, tincture, or even under the pillow to promote vivid or prophetic dreams.
Skullcap: This dainty plant, a member of the pea family, is a well-known nervine herb used traditionally in Western herbalism. It is primarily valued for its calming, antispasmodic, and sedative properties, making it a go-to remedy for nervous system imbalances.
Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) is traditionally used to calm and quiet the mind and is a tonic to the nervous system as a whole. It is often considered when symptoms of irritability, anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia are accompanied by muscular tension and twitching. I like to work with this herb in cases of insomnia linked to an overactive mind, racing thoughts, or nervous tension.
Lavender: Long has it be known that Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is helpful for times of stress and to calm an anxious mind. Lavendar has been traditionally used for its anxiolytic, nervine relaxant, carminative, nervine tonic and spasmolytic actions. This aromatic herb is wonderful for the treatment of anxiety, irritability, restlessness and nervous excitability, and is wonderful herb to work with in cases of insomnia.
Lemon balm: Traditionally used for digestive complaints and as a mild sedative, Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is primarily considered a wonderful ally for nervous digestive complaints, and sleep and mood disorders. Known as the ‘bust bee’ plant, Lemon balm is great for those with non stop energy, to help them find calm.
Passionflower: Beautiful Passionflower(Passiflora incarnata) is used in the Western Herbal tradition as a sedating nervine tonic and relaxant. It is considered antidepressant and also an anxiolytic. It is a go-to remedy for sleep disorders and in particular for those who seem to lay waiting for far too long for sleep to take them.
To the indigenous people’s of the Americas, Passionflower is thought to open one’s hearts, and protect those who speak to, the Gods. It offers protection and nurtures the spirit. This plant is wonderful for those who may be burnt out due to working with/for others by allowing them more compassion and less burnout.
Rose petals: Not only do rose petals look beautiful in a tea blend, they have also been shown to be beneficial for inflammation, stress, and depression. Rose petals may help to promote restful sleep, uplift your mood and calm and relax your mind. Reducing inflammation is beneficial for whole body health.
Blue lily: Blue Water Lily has been revered for thousands of years in ancient Egypt, India, and various mystical traditions for its calming, euphoric, and visionary properties. It is known to open the heart, enhance dreams, relax the nervous system, and deepen meditation or ritual work.
Use: Use as per instructions on the label. Can be steeped for longer for a stronger brew, or overnight in the fridge as an infusion, to be enjoyed the next day as a cool refreshing beverage. Add honey or sweetener of choice for a sweet note.
Safety considerations:
Lavender should not be used in those with a known allergy; Lemon balm may potentiate the sedative effects of alcohol, but as a herbal tea, this is highly unlikely due to its consumption in such low doses; Blue Lily is best avoided in pregnancy due to the possibility it is a mild uterine stimulant.
